What is Barbershop?
A barbershop chorus or quartet is not:
- just for men in straw boaters who like to sing "Down by the Old Mill Stream"
- structured like a pop quartet, or a church or community choir, where the highest voices sing the melody
Barbershop is:
- close four-part harmony, using specific barbershop chord structures that "ring" when performed correctly
- performed without music and without accompaniment
- uniquely American, a blend of both African and European influences
